After months of rehearsal, the Theatre Production class is getting ready to showcase their skills on stage and put their talents to the test in competition with the play “Women”.
The student-run class is preparing for their annual competition. Student director Lily Ruffner, senior, said the group is looking forward to showing off all their hard work.
“People are doing really well memorizing,” Ruffner said. “I am so proud of how far they’ve come in such a short amount of time.”
Junior Sophia Long, who plays Meg, said the storyline is inspired by the play “Little Women”. It follows the story of four sisters navigating life during the Civil War. The actors are currently working on blocking and learning lines.
“Miss Steckbeck announced the show last year at our end-of-year awards banquet,” said Long. “I was so excited I jumped out of my seat!”
The class is entirely run by students. The student directors lead rehearsals and make decisions with little teacher involvement. Junior Sanaa’ Archer says this is her favorite part about the class.
“It honestly just feels less intimidating,” Archer said. “It’s so much more fun knowing it’s my peers running it and not an adult, how it typically is.”
For Long and her peers, the ultimate goal is to succeed in competition. Long said a win would be meaningful not just for the class, but for the entire theatre department.
“Ideally the goal would be to be in top two in our regionals so that we can move on to state and compete there,” said Long.
The group will host a preview performance of “Women” on Nov. 20 at Avon High School. Ruffner said it will be a fun night for friends and family to come and see the class’s hard work.
“It’s a really fun show and we’re really looking forward to competing,” said Ruffner. “Come see us Nov. 20… it’s free!”
