Jumping into AHS’ Spirit Night

Football season is over, pep rallies are dead, and spirit week themes are seldom followed. Where is Avon’s school spirit?
Well, it can be found at your local Urban Air. On Jan. 21, from 4-8 p.m., Avon High School will be holding a Spirit Night at the Plainfield Urban Air. 20 percent of the event proceeds will go to Riley Children’s Hospital. All customers affiliated with AHS will get reduced prices, still helping those in need.
Spirit Night is not the only way to help raise money for the children’s hospital. Individual student fundraisers can also help fund the institution. Student Government Senate member, senior Nick Coello, details AHS’ upcoming events to help Riley Children’s Hospital.
“We have a series of events leading up to the Riley Dance Marathon, which is also known as our Winter Gala, and we’d like to raise tons of money for Riley Children’s Hospital,” said Coello.
Many of Avon’s competitors raise money for Riley as well. Student Government speaker of the House, senior Andrew Onochie, details his goals for this year’s spirit night.
“Other schools, such as Carmel High School and Westfield High School, that have a similar number of students in attendance, raise way more for Riley than Avon does, and so this year, we’re looking to turn that around and raise some more money,” Onochie said.
Student Government has hosted Dine-to-Donate’s and other fundraisers in the past. However, this year’s spirit night is a unique occurrence for AHS.
“We’ve never done something like this before,” said Onochie. “We haven’t really outsourced much, just stayed within the high school for a lot of our opportunities to raise money.”
Because of Avon’s historical setbacks in raising money for Riley, this year, the Student Government said they intend to fundraise more. The more people who attend Spirit Night, the more money there is available to fund Riley Children’s Hospital.
“I think if we could get 100 people there, that’d be amazing,” said Onochie.
Students are not the only ones excited for Spirit Night. History teacher and Student Government sponsor Mrs. Meadows said she believes the benefits of the Spirit Night are plentiful.
“It can be pretty cost-effective, as far as Urban Air pricing goes,” Meadows said. “If you want something fun to do on a cold Wednesday night and are looking to help us raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital, then go to Spirit Night.”
