Fit Check: What Influences Student Style?

“I feel special.”

Junior Javoni Moore describes how his favorite outfit makes him feel.

Outfits are often seen as the first impression of a person and can reflect the person’s personality as well. With over 3,500 students at Avon High School, a wide variety of student styles are seen.

Sophomore Elyssa Wilson decides on most of her outfits that morning.

“Sometimes I have a plan or lay out an outfit the day before, but most of the time I throw something together the morning of,” Wilson said.

Moore also picks his outfits each morning based on how he’s feeling in that moment.

“My outfit for the day really just depends on the mood I feel,” Moore said. “If I want to feel happy, I’ll wear an outfit that makes me feel confident.”

When Moore feels like it is more a lazy day, he prefers to wear sweats.

“I think it’s more for a lazy day, I think if I want to be more comfortable, I will wear sweatpants and a sweatshirt,” Moore said. “I think it makes me feel more tired throughout the day though.”

While Moore said he believes sweatpants make him feel more tired, Wilson and junior Mili Patel said the more comfortable they are, the better they feel in school.

“It makes me more comfortable but, in my opinion, whenever I’m wearing sweatpants, I feel like I can pay attention better because I’m comfortable and not uncomfortable,” Wilson said.

Patel agrees that the more comfortable she is, the more willing she is to put effort in.

“At school, I like to dress for school and at school I want to be comfy to ensure that I am learning to my best ability by being comfortable,” Patel said

While Patel may dress comfortably, she said she always wears her outfits with confidence.

“Confidence is key,” Patel said. “But you should always wear something that makes you want to get up in the morning and just be you.”

Similarly, Wilson said you should dress for yourself and not others.

“I feel like my outfits do reflect my personality,” Wilson said. “It’s so important you make sure you feel confident and happy with what you are wearing and that you are not wearing it because it’s what everyone around you is wearing.”
