Student-Run Business Sees Valentine’s Day Spike

School is often seen as a place where students work bell to bell and then go home. However, many people miss the aspect of student involvement in the school and how they create things to make their experience better. An example of those would be student-ran businesses. In a building designed for learning, some students are going a step further by becoming entrepreneurs.

This is the case for Meira Bonham, who runs a flower bouquet business, assembling flowers for students who roam the halls of Avon High School. Being a student at the school, she is other students’ go-to florist, which leads to a large number of bouquets to make. This becomes increasingly clear during the Valentine’s Day season where flower purchases are at an all time high across the nation. Bonham gives an inside look at what this is like.

“This is my second Valentine’s Day doing this, so it is nothing that I am not prepared for,” Bonham said. “But it is definitely more stressful when all my friends are relying on me at once.”

While this may seem like a busy schedule, it once was just a student making flowers for fun at the start. What began as a hobby quickly transformed into a business. Bonham gives an inside look on how it all started.

“I started out making paper flowers for fun and for friends’ birthdays,” Bonham said. “But then people started reaching out to buy them and I thought that I could turn this into a fun way to make money.”

Now with this Valentine’s Day coming up, the search for materials starts and the worry about spending too much money sets in. For Bonham, this is no issue, and she perseveres through the rush.

“When I go to the story to buy all the resources for this many people, the price makes me wonder if it I really worth it,” Bonham said. “But when it is all done I think it’s worth it and it is definitely relieving getting it all done.”
