‘Catch Me If You Can’: the Students Behind the Show

by Sunny Smyth

Not all heroes wear capes, sometimes they wear dark colors and headsets; the stage members of high school theatre are gearing up to help create the musical production of the year.

Catch Me If You Can is the musical this season, and the stage crew is putting in the effort to make it worth the watch. Stage crew members help build and craft the visuals for theatrical shows and help keep things running smoothly backstage.

Senior Maddie Stahl, stage manager for the musical, said that they are making sets for the future, and that “there’s a lot of big moving pieces.”

In addition to reusing pieces from previous shows, the set being built this year will also be reusable for many future productions. The crew’s first endeavor for this year is to finish building the set, which consists of several props and center pieces.

Lead scene shop member Nat Stahl said that they like building and painting sets, and it is a fun thing to do with friends. “I love hanging out with everybody.”

Auditorium Director Ben Biddle is leading the crew, as he has done for many years. He has plans for an ambitious set, which includes six “Periaktois,” Greek spinning platforms that will be used on stage.

Building sets isn’t the only factor that goes into making a stage come to life. Stage design also consists of lighting, sound, and props to help create an experience for everyone in the audience.

“I like seeing the stuff get built. I like seeing it come together, and then when you see the performance, and you know all the stuff leading up to it, it feels great,” said Biddle.
