There are over 300 classes offered at Avon High School. A lesser-known class is Library Media.
Library Media is a one-semester class offered in the library. Students learn how the library operates, and the various jobs associated with it. Under the guidance of librarian Ms. Kovach, they organize books, run errands, and delve deeply into the research process to gain an in-depth understanding of what it’s like to be a librarian teacher.
“They look, and they see other kids working library jobs during the day and feel that that might just be the only part of library media class, but there are three independent projects that are incorporated within the class,” said Kovach.
For the class’s projects, students read two books of their choosing each semester. Reading, for some students, can help them as a form of escapism, and the library can provide a sense of consistency in their lives.
“Last year I had a senior and she ended up deciding she wanted to be a librarian,” Kovach said. “So, it’s really neat to see students identify with the library and pick that as their career.”
Even students who don’t feel strongly about the library still take the class, often to fill a gap in their schedule. Sophomore Clara Pell, who took the class last year, was initially unaware of what it entailed when she enrolled.
“I didn’t know until I got into the class, and then I ended up really enjoying it,” Pell said. “It gave me time to read books, and I just got to, like, chill,”
Library Media can teach students who wish to pursue a librarian career, skills that librarians and librarian teachers use on the day-to-day. Library Media is the inside look to the world of the library.
“It’s really neat to see students identify with the library,” Kovach said. “I also love seeing my students grow up and see what they decide to do with their life.”
