What’s the purpose of the club?
For me, the purpose of the club is to create a place where people feel comfortable to share their cultural identity and learn about other people’s cultural identity through fun activities.
When did you join Multicultural club?
I joined it in my freshman year. One of my best friends, Jasmine Diallo, was the president at the time. I’ve been a member ever since. I joined because a lot of my friends would go, and I ended up staying because it was a really fun, positive environment, and I really wanted to continue that.
How did you become President?
When Diallo graduated, she gave me the presidency. So, I’ve been a president since I was a junior.
What do you do as President?
I organize all the meetings, so I find a date and then usually make the PowerPoint used for the meeting. I also work with my board to organize everything. I’ll work with our social media coordinator to create a social media post, then I’ll work to create something for attendance, and just simple things like that. But I mainly present the presentations and help other people if they have any questions or things like that.
What are you trying to achieve as President?
I just want to create a fun club that people are excited to go to. It’s really just meant to be a place where people can come together. And I want to make sure that we can be as inclusive as possible of different people.
What typically goes on at a club meeting?
We usually have a theme for the day. Most recently our theme was Hispanic Heritage Month, so I talked about informational stuff, and then we did an activity where we made tissue paper flowers, which is a Mexican craft.
What other activities does the club do?
I think the most popular activity that we do is the trash bag dress competition. It’s an activity meant to get people creative and working as a team, where groups will research cultural dress or cultural fashion from a culture of their choosing, and then we present at the end.
Is there anything else about the meetings that you want to mention?
I always make sure we have a drink and a fun snack. I always bring Napolitanke, which is a Croatian candy, and then my friends usually bring snacks from South Korea or Japan.
Is there anything that you do outside of the meetings?
Not really. I’d say we’re a pretty casual club, and we only meet once a month at school. We’re doing trunk or treat, and our theme for that is flight attendants, so kind of around the world.
Anything during your tenure as President that you want to mention?
I’m really proud of the space I’ve created, and I’m really proud of every meeting that I make. I’d say I tried to be representative of different cultures, even those that I’m not a part of, and I think with others’ input, I’ve really achieved a great place for people to be.
Are there any hopes that you have for the remainder of your presidency?
I just hope that our membership continues to grow and that our club continues to be as good as it is.
