Attraction Co-President Amy Arriaga’s Passion for Show Choir Takes the Stage

by Eva Pearson

What do you do as Co-President of Attraction?

I try to make sure that everybody in the group feels included and that they’re staying on task. I am also trying to make a fun and positive environment this year with everybody…even though it already is! My goal is to make the girls in Attraction feel comfortable with one another and that they always have someone to go to if they need something. Other than that, I help plan events and run the GroupMe.

What other choirs are you a part of this year?

I am also in Chambers, which is a concert choir. You have to at least have one year of experience in a concert or show choir beforehand. Previously, I was also a part of Allegros.

What made you want to join show choir in the first place?

I have always had a passion for singing! Since I was little, I have always been singing. I would always try to overpower my sister’s singing when we were in the car, picked to do choir in intermediate school, and since then have tried to be a part of any choir program I could be a part of.

What is one of the most memorable moments you have of being in show choir?

During our Plainfield competition last year, during warm-ups, Mr. Stainbrook used it to hype us up. We were all dancing to our show songs, but we weren’t doing our actual choreography. We were all just getting loose and having fun! Stainbrook was new that year too, so it really made a good first impression for him.

Do you have a favorite show you’ve performed in?

During my freshman year we did our “School Girls and Ghosts” show and it was just so creative. It was honestly the first time I had ever seen any show like it and we did lots of iconic songs like “Bump in the Night” and “Thriller” that were all so fun to sing and dance to.

Do you have a favorite costume from a past competition?

My favorite costume would probably be my pink Bridgerton dress because it was so elegant!

Arriaga sports her pink Bridgerton dress during last year’s Attraction show.

What is one piece of advice/words of wisdom you would give to your underclassmen show choir peers?

Give everything you do 100%, even if you feel like you’re embarrassing yourself. It’s okay to make mistakes and we are all human.

How are you feeling about your upcoming show for Attraction?

I am feeling really good about it! Our opening song will hit the audience and personally I have never done anything like this show in all four years competing. Let’s just say that we will be making some really cool sounds that will merge together to form a really cool beat.

What is your dream song to perform?

I would say “Colors of the Wind” because that song means a lot to me. My dad loves that song, and he played it throughout my whole childhood so I would love to sing it on stage one day.

If you were able to join every choir at AHS, would you?

Honestly, yes. I would have loved to be in Allegros again this year, but I did not have room for it in my schedule because it really pushed my musical knowledge. Concert choir and show choir just have a hold on my heart, but to join every single choir would just be a lot of work. If I had the time and space in my schedule I would join as many as I could.
