Meet the Girl with a Paint Brush, NAHS President Bella Ryan

by Malak Marzak

How did you get into art, and when did you know that you loved it?

I think I’ve always been doing art in a way because my mom’s an art teacher. I’ve always loved art, I’ve enjoyed making things, and I’ve enjoyed being able to be creative through art.

Do you plan on continuing art later in life whether it be as a side hobby or as a career?

As a career, I wouldn’t, but I think that art teaches you a lot about being creative, being innovative, and being perceptive. That can be carried over to a lot of different careers that maybe don’t actually involve art. However, as a hobby, most of my hobbies are in the arts realm.

What has been your best memory in NAHS?

I had a lot of fun doing Junior Day of Caring, hanging out with some very fun and artistic people, and painting a mural at the ACSC PD. I just got to hang out and do art which is what NAHS is all about.

What are some of the things that NAHS has done so far this year?

We’ve already done multiple face paintings at different events, we painted a backdrop for homecoming, and we have run several workshops.

Who was the most inspiration to you in NAHS?

I think my biggest inspiration was Emma Cremeans, who was a previous president of NAHS, who graduated two years ago. When I was a freshman, she was the president of NAHS.

How important is being in NAHS to you? Especially in relation to other clubs.

It’s pretty important to me. I enjoy planning different activities that we’re going to do with the other officers. I think it’s really fun. It’s something that’s pretty stress-free for me.

What has been the hardest part of being a part of, and leading NAHS? What challenges have come in the way?

I think the hardest part is just generally making sure that it’s that it’s fun and then it never is a stressful club. Hopefully the members don’t really feel like they have to put a ton of work into understanding what they’re supposed to do. As president, I want to make sure that everyone’s having fun and no one’s feeling left out.

Outside of NAHS what other clubs, sports, or activities are you a part of?

I’m an Irish dancer and I also do Academic Super Bowl for art this year.

What would you say has been your favorite class that you’ve taken?

I would say AP Psychology because I love Mrs. Chenoweth. I have been interested in psychology for a while, and at one point I wanted to be a psychiatrist. Although I’m not really leaning towards that anymore, I’m really interested in how our brains work.

 What is your favorite book?

I really love Song of Achilles. I cried a lot, and I’m going to reread it soon.

What is your favorite part of you and your personality?

I think my favorite part about me and my personality is that whether I’m with my friend, my family, or even kind of new people, I feel like I don’t change my personality too much to try to fit in. I feel like I know my personality.

What is your favorite accomplishment, not art-related?

My favorite non-art-related accomplishment is going to be skipping a grade.

What are you most afraid of?

I’m so scared of scorpions. I’ve never even seen a scorpion, but I’ve had nightmares about scorpions. I hate them. They terrify me, especially really small ones.
