As I walked the halls between classes, I started counting the shoes people would wear: ten pairs of Jordans, three Yeezy slides, seven pairs of Converse, two bunny slippers, four Hoka running shoes, and three pairs of combat boots. As I kept counting, I found that there was one type of shoe that was impossible to avoid. Around every corner, on every flight of stairs, they were waiting. I counted twenty-three pairs of UGG Slippers.
UGG slippers, specifically the Tasman models, have become one of the biggest fashion trends of 2024. Made from real sheep fur, UGG slippers cost an average of 110 bucks a pop. With this large price tag, I began to wonder, why do people love these shoes so much?
On the official UGG website, the Tasman slide is described as having “an) ultra-lightweight, durable outsole, plush wool lining, and suede uppers. It goes with anything and has an easy slip-on silhouette that will stay timeless forever.” This description seems generous, seeing as the shape of the Tasman is more reminiscent of a loaf of bread than a shoe. Many students at Avon High School seem to disagree. UGG slides are surprisingly worn by students year-round.
Originally, this was a charming fad; however, it seems that it has become less about the charm and comfortability of this shoe, and more about its status symbol.
One of UGG’s biggest claims to fame is their shoe’s comfort levels. And the shoes are quite comfortable. With lots of soft cushioning and furry lining, the slides do not disappoint. The real problem with these shoes is that people are no longer wearing them for comfort. Fur-lined shoes are made for colder weather and indoors, not for hikes or the beach. Yet, somewhat unsurprisingly, they can still be found covered in sand and in photos of luxurious jungle excursions.
We have grown obsessed with following fashion trends and wearing the new “it items”, so much so that the need to fit in has become more important than the need to dress properly. In the summer, UGGs will become sweaty and hot. In the winter, UGG boots will get soaked and soggy. No matter how trendy or comfortable they are, UGGs are ultimately impractical and altogether “UGG-ly”.
