Hook Onto A New Club!

by Cara Meissner

From just being created last year to a steady 50 members being a part of the club, Crochet Club has officially risen up the ranks of activities at Avon High School to join.

“It’s like a craft circle,” said art teacher and club sponsor, Margo Wallace.

Wallace had begun the club last year when one of her senior students asked her to be the sponsor and the rest was history.

“We have an advisory board this year, it is no longer just me and another student because of the club size,” Wallace said.

Currently the advisory board consists of senior Jimena Portillo, juniors Idowu Adeleke and Grace Schenk, and sophomores Kymora Cox, Liv Leadman, and Aketza Ruiz-Lam.

“We meet together, but typically we do more independent work,” sophomore and advisory board member Cox said. “We all work on our own projects, I usually do more calmer things while listening to music.”

Outside of their independent works, the club find themes to center their projects around or different donations to create.

“Last year we made a basket of crocheted stuffed animals we donated for the Riley Dance Marathon,” Wallace said. “This year we are partnering with a hospital to donate items to the NICU department.”

The club is open to any students interested in finding a way to keep their hands busy and pick up a new hobby or further indulge their skills in crocheting.

“We always have extra hooks and yarn,” Cox said. “We have meetings twice a month before school on Mondays and every SRT.”

Students can contact Mrs. Wallace on Schoology if interested on joining the GroupMe/Schoology Page for exact club meeting dates and times.
