While there are various treatments for Cancer available today, there is still much research needed to find a cure. The main club that raises awareness for cancer at Avon is the Avon Cancer Society

Founded by senior Aryan Chander, Avon Cancer Society is all about raising awareness for cancer research. The club leadership includes President Aryan Chander, Vice President Ishneet Ghotra, Secretary Nick Rankin, Community Outreach Leader Kidus Leben, and Social media manager Natasha Nair.

Club meetings typically include games, snacks, and activities that raise awareness and inform about cancer and cancer research. The club periodically has guest speakers that speak on cancer research development. Recently, the club had Mrs. Rankin, a pediatric cancer researcher, come and speak to the club about the development of drugs to help treat cancer symptoms.

“It was very informative,” Chander said. “I learned about the process of making cancer drugs, as well as learn about current cancer research.”

In one of their upcoming meetings, Avon High School Counselor Tiffany Raidy will speak on her experiences on living with cancer, and how its impacted her life.

“It is important to know what it’s like living with cancer, as well as its effects on the body,” Chander said.
