Of all the world languages offered at AHS, one stands out from the rest: Japanese. Being the only Asian language taught at the high school and the only one that teaches character writing, Japanese offers a new level of diversity to curriculum concerning education and culture. But its influences extend beyond the classroom, too. Anyone is welcome in Japanese Club, an after-school activity sponsored by Sensei Ramirez dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Japanese culture.
The Echo caught up with President Ava King to learn more about the club and what students can get from attending their monthly meetings.
What is Japanese Club? What do you do?
Japanese club is a club where we learn and do different projects related to Japanese culture, traditions, and things they celebrate! We make crafts, watch videos, and discuss all sorts of things related to Japan, depending on the topic and time of the year.
What sorts of things have you done so far this year?
So far, we have celebrated the Japanese New Year, made miniature sculptures to celebrate the Sapporo Snow Festival, and recently, made Setsubun masks, which are masks of Japanese demons called “oni” worn during the Setsubun Festival.
What’s your favorite thing you’ve done in Japanese Club?
My favorite memory so far from the Japanese club would be building things out of air dry clay to celebrate the Sapporo festival in Japan with my friends!
What will you miss most about Japanese Club when you graduate?
Something I’ll miss will be the environment and learning about all the different things Japan celebrates with everyone!
