Q&A with Fred Wittman, Yearbook Editor-in-Chief

By Jerica Bernfield // Reporter

What grade are you in?
12th.

What’s your club and position?
Editor-in-chief of yearbook.

How did you achieve this position?
Over time, this being my third year as I started as a sophomore. I worked with Mrs. Schonhoff for multiple years and have been working towards this goal for multiple years, which allowed me to know a lot about Yearbook and everything involved in it, designing, creating, interviewing which helped me to lead.

Would you consider it an easy task to get to where you are now?
I would say it’s not so much as difficult as it was time consuming. It takes time both in school and out of school, so you have to be devoted to it.

How’s the year going so far in terms of progress and plans?
I can’t disclose anything but we’re in the very early designs. We’re working a lot on team building and introducing the new members to the Yearbook. We have a whole new lab and computers which will be super helpful during the production.

What is it like working with your team and how are you all connected?
I think we have a good team, and we can all work well together. Everyone here loves some aspect of designing or journalism in the Yearbook, but I’d definitely say one thing that keeps everyone connected is how unique everybody is. Everyone has their own character, interests, and things they’re good at. Everyone being different helps everyone work together so if one person isn’t as great at one thing, another can fill in the gaps.

How do your personal skills help you in your role?
I know a decent amount of most things in Yearbook like interviewing, story writing, caption writing, design. I’m well rounded but I’m not the best at everything like for instance our copy editor is the best at writing and our photo editor is the best at photo editing but since I have a well-rounded set of skills, it helps me to lead the team.

What was your motivation to join Yearbook and go for President?
I’d always heard about it since my sister was in it and she always told me how great it was. I met Miss Schonhoff and had a love of history. Looking at the old yearbooks was like a time capsule that shows what was happening during that specific year and the culture and interests in it. It showed what the students were like, and I wanted to be the one to try and save those images. I went for president because I just wanted to lead the team, something I enjoyed doing.

What have been some other challenges you’ve faced in your role or Yearbook in general?
It’s a tough role because you need to know a lot of people you’re going to be interviewing as well as your team and that can be tough, especially when there’s 20 people. Knowing who they are as a person and what they’re good at is kind of tough, learning all of it. Beyond that, starting is difficult. I started as a sophomore and was the youngest person in the class. You don’t know a lot when you start especially in a new yearbook class where everything is new. You’re not good at it and it’s easy to want to quit but you just have to push through it and trust the process.

How do you see yourself moving up in the world?
I hope to know everyone really well and make sure our team feels connected and comfortable around each other.

If you had to eat at only three restaurants for the rest of your life, what restaurants would you choose?
Oh, definitely Buca di Beppo, it’s an Italian place downtown. Huge portion sizes, amazing. I’d say also Bj’s because of the pizookies. I get the free birthday one every year. Third place, probably Texas Roadhouse with the good rolls and the cinnamon butter.

If you had one day to go anywhere and do anything with no limitations, what would you do?
I’d go to space. I think walking around space would be really cool.

Which actor is better, Chris Pratt or Jack Black?
Jack Black, he’s funnier.

What are your favorite pastimes?
I like going on long walks and finding cool places outside where you can’t drive. You can find cool places to hike and go wherever. I like fishing, sometimes I go creek fishing. I also really like doing spontaneous trips with friends.

What movies, TV shows, or songs have you been into lately?
Jump the Turnstile by TV girl is definitely stuck in my head right now. As for a movie, Interstellar is absolutely amazing. I also want to watch Fight Club just since I’ve heard it’s a really good one.

What would your dream house be?
Probably a transparent dome outside of reality where you can just push a button to summon things you want.
