About

AvonEcho.com is Avon High School’s official online student publication. The site offers news, features, sports and editorial content and is updated on a weekly basis.

Led by web editor-in-chief Tara Martin, managing editor Brannigan Watson, and social media editor Elshadai Aberra, the online Echo provides coverage of the events and topics Avon students care most about, presenting content in a variety of formats, from standard news write-ups to slideshows and video segments.

The staff is advised by Bill Caulton. The print edition of The Echo is led by editor-in-chief Caroline Emenaker and managing editors Prabhvir Lakhan and Nathan Miller.

Tara Martin, 11

Web Editor-in-Chief

What three words would you choose to describe yourself?

“Jumpy, quirky, and a nut.”

What is your favorite restaurant?

“I like Chipotle.”

Why did you join newspaper?

“I joined newspaper when I was a sophomore because I saw it on the little transcript thing when I was in eighth grade and I was like ‘I love writing, I [have] got to get on that,’ so here I am.”

If you were in a Witness Protection Program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

“I would live in Cuba with Tupac and my new name would be Tara Banana. That’s my Pokémon name, they’ll never catch me.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“In ten years, I’m living my best life, I’ve moved far away from Avon, Indiana, I’m happy, and I run a self-care twitter account that talks about bath bombs a lot.”

Brannigan Watson, 12

What three words would you choose to describe yourself? 

Quirky, outspoken, and busy.

What is your favorite restaurant?

I would say Chipotle, but Tara already did that. You know what? Chipotle. 

Why did you join newspaper?

I really enjoyed writing and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten better at writing, so I thought it would be a good fit for me. 

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

I would live in Monaco and my new name would be… Dora. 

Where do you see yourself in 10 year? 

The president of Public Relations for a large company in a major city.

Elshadai Aberra, 10

What three words would you choose to describe yourself? 

Nerdy, awkward, and short.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Probably Chick-fil-A, but I also love Panda Express. 

Why did you join newspaper? 

I love writing and actually want to be a journalist when I grow up.

If you were in a Witness Protection Program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

Well, my new name would be Diana because my dad almost named me that and… I would probably live in England because British boys are pretty cute, actually so are European boys in general.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

I would be 25 so I’d be in law school. I probably wouldn’t be married yet, but I would for sure be living in Chicago or New York… yeah that’s all I see for now.

Tired, musical, and artistic. 

What is your favorite restaurant?

Bangkok Kitchen

Why did you join newspaper? 

I took journalism my freshman year and I really liked writing stories so I took Newspaper sophomore year. 

If you were in a Witness Protection Program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

I would probably move to Rome or somewhere in Italy and I feel like I would just do a variation of my name somehow. Hmm, just add an “a” instead an “e” I’ll just be Carolina. 

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

I want to be a music teacher, so I’ll probably stay in Indiana or maybe Texas because it’s a big music state, but I want to teach band or orchestra.

Nathan Miller, 11

What three words would you choose to describe yourself? 

Sociable, impulsive, and dedicated.

What is your favorite restaurant?

I really like Panera Bread because I go there with my friends a lot.

Why did you join newspaper? 

Mr. Caulton didn’t have enough people on newspaper staff so he passed out this thing in English nine honors that asked if you’d be interested in yearbook or newspaper and I didn’t want to limit my options so I said I was “slightly interested in both” and then at the end of the year he said “you can take either” and I just chose newspaper because I thought it would look good on a college application.

If you were in a Witness Protection Program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

I would live in a small Midwestern town and my name would be William Caulton. I would be the advisor of a newspaper staff, but it wouldn’t last long because I’d miss my friends and come back to Avon.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

I don’t know, I don’t have 20/29 vision. But seriously, I don’t know, I don’t like to think about it. I hope I’m having a good time and that I’m surrounded by people that care about me and maybe… married.

Prahbvir Lakhan, 11

What three words would you choose to describe yourself? 

Pessimistic, Indian, and quiet.

What is your favorite restaurant?

I like Round Table Pizza, it’s in San Francisco.

Why did you join newspaper? 

I’m a big fan of the truth and I think it’s important for people to know the truth and yeah… the Avon Echo isn’t covering any ground breaking news, but if I wanted to get into journalism… I could, you know? This could be a stepping run. 

If you were in a Witness Protection Program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

If I told you, then anyone could catch me. 

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 

I’ll be 26 and if everything goes well, I’ll hopefully be finishing up med school.

What three words would choose to describe yourself?

Annoying, tall and rude.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Chick-fil-A is really good because,.. it’s Chickf-fil-A, it’s just really good.

Why did you join newspaper?

I was told they have pizza parties every week, but that does not happen! So I was lied to and that’s why I joined.

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

I would live in Oregon and my name would be Natasha because I fell like that’s a cool name. I’d feel like a Russian spy.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I want to be married, I want to have a kid, I want to be happy… but I don’t that that’s going to happen. And yeah, I want to be a cool business or woman or lawyer or something.

Laura Ryle, 12

What three words would you choose to describe yourself?

Creative, inquisitive, and observant.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Would Starbucks count? Probably Starbucks.

Why did you join newspaper?

I joined newspaper because I want to get into journalism as a career when I’m older so I thought this would a good experience for that.

If you were in  a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

I would probably live in DC, I guess, and my name- well, I’m a big Parks and Rec fan, so probably Mrs Bert Macklin.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I hope to work at some kind of local news station, hopefully as a reporter, or maybe a news anchor, I’m not quite sure. Hopefully I’ll be married at that point, but I don’t know about kids- they kind of scare me sometimes, but I might have some. I’ll definitely have a cat though.

Blunt, hardworking, and I would like to think that I’m funny.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Metro diner.

Why did you join newspaper?

I chose to join newspaper because I’m extremely passionate about writing and I think mainstream journalism has moved away largely from what journalism should be which is a non-biased presentation of facts.

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

I would live in Amsterdam and my name would be Paul Sitkowski.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself probably working at a small publication.

What three words would you choose to describe yourself?

I’m mostly reserved, dedicated, and I always say how blessed I am, so you can use that if you want to.

What is your favorite restaurant?

There’s this place in Chicago called Shaw’s. It’s really good and they have the best sushi I’ve ever had.

Why did you join newspaper?

So, my friend Colby told me that it was going to be a really good way to take pictures because I wanted to more with that, so I basically decided over that Summer that I wanted to go into photography as a career, so I thought newspaper would be on of the better ways to start going along that path.

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name? 

I’ve never really thought about that! My name would probably be Eli or something and I don’t know where I’d live. If it’s witness protection, I’d probably end up in Wyoming or something.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully taking pictures, either on stage or in a stadium for a sports team or something like that. It all really depends on where college takes me and the opportunities I have then.

Dope, brown, and creative.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Cheesecake Factory.

Why did you join newspaper?

I write good.

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

My name would be Juarez Gomez and I would live in the UK.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully I’ll have two albums out and will be doing comedy specials or tours and such.

What three words would you choose to describe yourself?

Sarcastic, caring, and hardworking.

What is your favorite restaurant?

My favorite restaurant is probably the Oasis Diner in Plainfield. 

Why did you join newspaper?

I took journalism my freshman year and I really liked it, so I applied, put in my application, and I got it and I was like “cool.” Yeah, I really like it.

If you were in a witness protection program, where would you live and what would be your new name?

I’d probably live in Fiji or something, you know? Somewhere nice and warm. I don’t know what my new name would be, but I’d probably use a name I’d really like for a different person and then choose a random last name.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I would hope that I’m doing something in science and that I’m either working on trying to get my masters degree or even higher in education and I’ll hopefully be doing something with physics or engineering. I would also hope to maybe have a family or be married by then. 10 years is a long time, so who knows?
