On Aug. 17, the Avon Orioles traveled to Plainfield to take on the Quakers in their first game of the 2018 season. The first half ended with only Avon on the board, in a 0-21 lead over the Quakers.

At halftime, junior and cheerleader Jalynn Lai was grateful to be back on the field for the first time since last season.

“It’s the first game. Everyone seems really excited and the team’s doing really well and everyone just seems to really enjoy being here and supporting Avon,” Lai said. “Over the summer practices, it’s kind of like, ‘what are we working for?’ but you get to the game and you see everyone here and it makes it all worth it.”

Senior and student section leader Max Moore sported black body paint from his shoulders down in order to cheer on the football team.

“I just get all the chants ready and keep everybody hype. Start the chants and stuff like that,” Moore said.

Junior Charlie King said the morale was high in the student section due to the three touchdown lead at halftime.

“[The lead] establishes our dominance over our rivals to the south,” King said.

The game concluded with Avon winning its first game of the season, 44-13. The Orioles play again this Friday, Aug. 24, at home against Ben Davis.
