On Aug. 23, the Avon varsity football team hit off their season with a game against Columbus North High School at Lucas Oil. The team beat Columbus North 48-14 and they were up the entire game. The football team was not the only group to represent Avon on the field. The dance team, cheerleaders, and Avon Marching Black and Gold joined the team on the field for a night under the lights.
During the first half, Avon scored 21 points in the first quarter and 20 points in the second quarter while Columbus North did not score. In the second half of the game, Avon scored seven more points during the third quarter and Columbus North scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.
“We always feel confident going into games,” senior Riley Browder said. “There isn’t a game where we aren’t prepared for our opponent and that makes us feel like we can beat anyone.”
During the game, Avon’s defense was able to put out 44 solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles. The team also had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Avon’s offensive team had a total of 207 yards; 101 passing yards and 106 rushing yards. Two of the five touchdowns scored by the offensive team were scored by rushing the ball. Sophomore running back Chrishon McCray assisted in scoring one of seven touchdowns at Lucas Oil.
“I feel like my greatest accomplishment during the game was the 60 yard touchdown that I scored,” McCray said. “The experience was unreal. Lucas Oil is just a great environment and having our students cheering for us like that made us work harder.”
Although the team won and had many achievements during the game, there are some things the team wants to work on moving forward into their season.
“We can work on just coming out stronger from the get go. We started off with a great kick from Tyler Anderson and I feel like we can keep that same energy the whole game,” McCray said.
