Week three of Indiana high school football had our Avon Orioles welcoming the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern to town. This game was a nail-biter all the way up to the final whistle.
Going into the second quarter, the Royals had a 5-0 lead caused by a field goal and a wild snap on a punt attempt forcing a safety for Avon. HSE added 20 more points in the second and was leading 25-7 at the half after a hail mary pass from senior Henry Hesson to senior Remington Gall. Our Orioles went to the locker room knowing they had to get something going, and they came out firing in the third. Avon put up 21 straight points and were up late in the fourth 28-25, but with three minutes left in the game, the Royals found the endzone and hit the extra point to go up 32-28. Avon could not convert on their next offensive drive and HSE would go on to score again, making the score 39-28. Hesson’s interception on the next drive sealed the deal as Avon lost, dropping them to 1-2 on the season.
Avon’s 11 penalties compared to HSE’s four was the deciding factor in this game. Avon is out for revenge come week four when they walk into Brownsburg and take on the number one team in the state and the rival Bulldogs. Game is on September 11 at C.F. Roark Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM.
