Q&A With DECA President Brooke Widner

By Ella Staton // Editor in Chief

What is your name and what grade are you in?

My name is Brooke Widner and I am in 12th grade.

How long have you been a member of DECA?

I have been in DECA for four years. I joined my freshman year, and I have been a member since.

What made you decide to join DECA?

I had a lot of friends who were in the club or just interested in it. Mr. Drosche was also my PCC teacher, and he was a big influence. I asked my friends about the club, and it actually piqued my interest. I wanted to meet new people and learn more about business in general.

Who did you look up to when you first joined the club?

The president my freshman year has been my biggest role model. She showed me a good example of a leader who made everyone feel wanted and welcome. When I became the president, I wanted to be just like her.

When did you become the president?

My sophomore year I was on the board, and I realized I loved being a leader. So, I ran for president and my junior year, I was elected as co-presidents with my best friend. Now, in my senior year I am the president and I could not be happier.

What do you aim to do as the president of DECA?

I want to encourage more involvement in our community. It can be easy to see DECA as just a club, but I want to help the community and make a difference. We do things like dances at nursing homes and big events for people to attend. I want people to know what DECA is, not just the name.

What lasting impacts do you want to leave on the next members of DECA?

I want the next leaders of DECA to foster the environment and friendships we have created. I feel like everyone feels welcome and like they have a place in DECA. It is somewhere that I feel like I always have someone. I trust the people around me and look forward to helping our community together.

What do you do for fun?

I play tennis and I love to scrapbook. I manage the boy’s tennis team in the fall and play on the girls’ team in the spring.  I also love to scrapbook things or events that are important in my life. I love to be creative.

What is your dream vacation?

Anywhere on the beach. I love the summer and everything that comes with it. I love swimming and tanning, especially when on the beach. I would be happy anywhere with sun and sand.
