The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is ready to induct new dedicated artists to let their creativity shine.

Senior Sunny Smyth, the president of NAHS, paints a picture of what it’s like being a part of this society. NAHS participates in many events and lets their members use their creativity to serve the community. Smyth says that she stayed in NAHS because of all of the opportunities it gave her.

“A lot of people think that NAHS just means that you draw sometimes, but in reality, it’s finding ways to impact Avon creatively in ways that you can’t typically do,” Smyth said.

The members of NAHS meet once a month to go over activities and upcoming events, but they can also create twice a month during workshops. Outside of these meetings at school, members of NAHS are able to participate in Carnival for a Cause, Trunk or Treat, the art show, murals, face painting, and more.

“I got to go face painting over the summer for the Hendricks County summer kickoff, and I got to do that with my friend Piper,” Smyth said. “I was super tired, but it was also just a lot of fun. I got to paint a lot of funky things on kids’ faces.”

Although NAHS members have a lot of fun, being in NAHS requires dedication. It’s important to show up to meetings, participate in activities, maintain a 3.5 GPA in art credits, etc. Lacy Ryan, an art teacher at Avon High School and one of the club’s sponsors, says that it is more than an art club.

“It’s not art club; we do have requirements to get accepted and to be a member of it,” Ryan said. “But once you are in, I think NAHS is a great club for anyone who is interested in arts.”

NAHS is also a great way to meet new people. Ryan says that she likes how supportive the members are of each other. NAHS is a way for people from different backgrounds with different goals to come together and be creative.

“Our kids want to go into science fields and medical fields and math fields and art fields, and they want to go into all the different things,” Ryan said. “But within their lives, they also appreciate art and they appreciate each other.”
