Taking 4 or more AP classes seems like a nightmare waiting to happen. Like it’s just sitting in the bushes, waiting to spring out and scare everyone out of the classroom!
When students think to take AP classes, they are always worried about the load of homework. They hear rumors and the horror stories about the homework and don’t know if they want to take the class because of the wall of work they might have to do. Lily Hwang, who’s taking this year APUSH, AP Calc., AP Lang and AP Environmental Sciences and is a junior here at Avon High School, is here for the challenge.
“They’re not too challenging. I feel like last year I didn’t like the AP E.S. class I took, especially like AP Chem,” Hwang said. “But this year I’m really enjoying all my AP classes. I feel like I’m actually enjoying learning in them.”
But Hweng isn’t the only one taking 4 AP classes. Orianna Gentry, also a junior, is taking AP Calc., AP Computer Science, AP Lang and AP Physics. Gentry doesn’t find the homework given too difficult but feels like some of the teachers check the homework enough and some do not.
Said Gentry, “A lot of my teachers do, but I do have one that does not check homework ever unless you fail a quiz.”
On the other side of the coin, Abigail Hills, a sophomore taking AP Chemistry, has had some strife caused by AP homework. Not too tedious for her, just finding it a bit overwhelming.
“Yeah, it’s a hard class. The homework is hard,” said Hills. “There’s a lot of it, but you know, to be expected.”
Addison Mcfarland, an AP World taking sophomore, finds the homework super tedious. It’s a lot of notetaking and can take many hours at a time. Mcfarland has an idea to better benefit the students taking her class.
“I would give them just more time in general just to do their work,” said Mcfarland. “I’d also say, ‘Hey, maybe you can do some of the notes over this chapter during the breaks we have like fall break.’”
Hwang has some advice to help with AP homework. “You can do your homework throughout the week. And it’s less stressful than getting your work that’s due the next day,” said Hwang. “And so, I would say the workload if I did it all in one day would be a lot, but since I can spread it out it’s not too bad.”
