The Boys Varsity Soccer team took on the Zionsville squad Saturday morning after winning three of their last four. The Zionsville Eagles up to this point are the number one team in the state.
Zionsville kicked off the scoring in the 17th minute of the first half to make it 1-0. This would remain as the score until the 13th minute of the second half when Zionsville netted a second goal to put the Orioles against the ropes. Moments later in the 20th minute, senior Hudson Gongwer put Avon on the board, making the score 2-1. But even with Gongwer’s goal, Avon just couldn’t keep up with the number one team in the state. Zionsville would go on to win 2-1 and continue their undefeated season.
“We just didn’t take our chances,” Gongwer said, “We had plenty of chances and didn’t put them in the back of the net.”
Gongwer said that he hopes him and the team take their mistakes from this game and improve on them come Tuesday, Sep. 24 when they play an impressive 8-3 Fishers team.
“I think the preparation before the game needs to be better,” Gongwer said, “[Especially] what we do the night before so we can be mentally prepared.”
