The Avon girls’ volleyball team serves their season off right with their victory against Westfield High School at home on October 1. Avon won the first set with a score of 25-14, the second set with a score of 25-15, and the third with a score of 28-26. Senior Paris Downing looks at game against Westfield as a step in the right direction for Avon.

“During our last game, our team preformed really good as a whole. We were flowing together and had really good connection as well. All the teams have some things they can work on and improve, but each game we play we progress more and more. I feel that our Westfield game was beneficial to us to help work on our execution. We succeeded with that mindset the first two sets, but in the third, it got a little shaky. We managed to pull through. Abby Maesch was a great asset to our team with 21 kills and Aubrey Lenz with 30 assists,” Downing said.

Senior Ellie Misner said that the team came prepared before the game against Westfield.

“I think our team came prepared. Before the game, we all ate dinner together which I think helped us focus for the game later that night,” Misner said.

Downing looks at the volleyball team’s season so far and sees their strengths that they have which they use to battle other teams.

“Our team is more consistent at coming out strong and waring out other teams. We have a lot of momentum and even when we lose, we keep fighting and make every point count,” Downing said.

Even with the volleyball team’s victory, Downing said that there is still more to improve upon in future games.

“Something our team can improve upon is communication. Our team has been doing some team bonding lately to help build up our team chemistry and work together better,” Downing said. “Since then, our games have improved tremendously and we work better together.”

The volleyball team has had to adjust to new changes in their program with COVID-19. Misner and the rest of the volleyball team have a new routine to keep practice sanitized.

“We clean all the volleyballs after practice, we wear our masks when we’re on the bench at games, during games, we don’t switch sides on the court between sets anymore, we don’t shake hands with the other team, and we use hand sanitizer every time we go back to the bench during our games,” Misner said.
