When students walked into school this morning, they were met with posters advertising “Mr. Nelson’s High Five Day!” with Assistant Principal Mr. Nelson. The posters encouraged students to help Nelson get 1,000 high fives by the end of the day.

The reason for this? A prank war between Guidance Counselor Mr. Cook and Nelson.

Much like the students at AHS, Nelson was also surprised when he sat down at his office, found a note and a counter delivered by Mr. Cook. The note read, “Hey, hope you’re having a good start to your day. I hope you don’t mind if I turn it into a great day!”

“Mr. Cook and I play tricks on each other every once in a while, and apparently, he’s been planning this one for a little while,” said Nelson.

Being in a school environment, Cook thought this was the perfect prank because of its playful nature.

“I wanted to make sure it’s nothing like demeaning or malicious,” said Cook.

With such a high number, it leads many to wonder if Nelson got to his goal, and he did! Near the end of seventh period, Nelson had managed 1,063 high fives and hoped to get a few more as students were leaving the building.

“The number was completely arbitrary. I didn’t think it would happen. So, kudos to you [Nelson],” said Cook.

Every bet has to have a prize, and for this bet it was a simple one, a whole lot of attention. “The prize has to do with food and a lot of public attention,” said Cook.

To which Nelson replied with laughter “Oh, great.”
