On Dec. 11th, Avon High School’s Orchestra performed their annual holiday concert. The event featured performances from the Intermezzo, Philharmonic, and Symphony Orchestras.

Led by Director Dean Westman, and Associate Director Joel Powell, the concert was a hit, with a sold out audience, and many guest appearances.

Appearances include Director of the Bands, Matt Harloff, and AHS Administrator Dr. Dan Peo.

The Symphonic Orchestra played a total of four pieces, accompanied by the Symphonic Band for three. Among the four pieces, many said that “The Grinch” was their personal favorite. With senior, and viola player Joe Perron echoing that sentiment.

“You know it’s a classic, but man, when you get the full concert [Orchestra] with bands behind it, and you put it together. It’s awesome,” said Perron.

For such a big event, it’s to be expected that a great deal of preparation has went into it. According to junior, and violin player, Mercy Oluwole, preparation for the event started early November.

“We’ve been preparing since about the beginning of November end of October. So I’ve been practicing virtually everyday,” said Oluwole.

Not only was the evening filled with Orchestra performances, but also featured a special guest, Santa! There was a holiday themed section adjacent to the stage, where photos could be taken with Santa.

The orchestra holiday concert is a part of the Sounds of the Season program that includes various performances across all of Avon school’s musical programs. The schedule for upcoming performances, provided by Avon School Corporation, is pictured below.
