This Friday, Dec. 15, the Avon choirs combined with the Avon Choral Orchestra in the spirit of winter holidays to conduct their 2023 Sounds of the Season concert.

The seven choirs (Oriole, Black and Gold, Symphonic, Allegros, Attraction, Chamber Singers, and Accents) sang a series of Christmas and Hanukkah celebration songs while the Choral Orchestra accompanied the two advanced mixed choirs on their concert piece Gloria as well as a full-group production of the Hallelujah chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

Senior Morgan Jones, who sang a solo in the Accents choir’s gospel song That Little Baby, said that she was happy to play a special part of this concert after being onstage for the past three years.

“It’s a winter concert for all the choir classes to show off what they’ve been working on,” said Jones.

Jones said that she was excited to collaborate with the orchestra students this year because of the difficulty it adds to the overall music experience.

“It’s just something you don’t really get a lot from high school choirs and orchestras,” said Jones. “It’s [cool] for an orchestra to accompany a big choir and to balance it all out.”

Jones said that although she was sad to be performing in her last Sounds of the Season, she would make sure to cherish the experience.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Jones. “I’m just going to try and live in the moment.”

Senior Grant Shirley, who plays violin in the Choral Orchestra, said that he was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform with the choirs.

“I’ve never played with the choir before,” said Shirley. “It’s pretty cool.”

Shirley said above all else he enjoyed the collaboration that the two performing arts mediums got to share.

“It’s really fun. The orchestra and the choir get to come together,” said Shirley. “Hallelujah, am I right?”
