To some people, Christmas is a favorite holiday because of the gifts received or the food eaten, but it’s a favorite for different reasons at Project Angel. For them, it’s the season of giving. Project Angel is a non-profit organization that has been helping feed families around Hendricks County for more than 30 years with the help of volunteers from Avon students and teachers.

The teacher who helps run Project Angel at Avon High School is Mr. Drosche.   Drosche said that Project Angel has been significant at the lower levels (elementary) for many years, but the high school has yet to be involved.

A few DECA students, juniors Alivia Carlisle and Avery Fanning, wanted to do a community giving project, and this fit perfectly.

Carlisle started doing Project Angel, because she was given the task of trying to see how many cans she could collect for a First Tee project, and it turned into something bigger than that. Carlisle and Fanning decided to work together and turn it into a community service project they are now competing with at DECA State.

Fanning said Project Angel serves those in need and provides an avenue in which others in the community can get involved. Following this mission, the title “Angel” stands for “Area Neighbors Giving Extra Love.”

Project Angel has brought over 1000 food items to help families across Hendricks County, according to Drosche.

If you want to get involved and help our community, visit the Project Angel website, http://www.projectangelofhendrickscounty.com, to learn more about opportunities to serve the community. The location of food drop-off and pick-up is the Avon United Methodist Church.
