Q&A With Calligraphy Club President: Rio White

By Luke Stafford // Reporter

What grade are you in?

I am a senior in high school.

Why did you join calligraphy club?

I joined calligraphy in my freshman year because all my close friends were a part of it, and they really enjoyed it.

What kept you coming back?

I kept coming back because I found joy in writing, and calligraphy was a nice way to improve that.

Is there anything that you plan on changing as club president?

I don’t think there’s anything I’d really change about the club now that I’m president. The way it’s been run since I’ve joined has always felt easy and entertaining, so I wouldn’t want to change that.

Why should people join the calligraphy club?

People should join calligraphy because it’s a great learning experience for writing and reading cursive. Cursive is very important in our current time, especially with writing signatures and reading historical documents.

How has calligraphy club bettered your experience in high school?

Calligraphy club has made me branch out more and I’ve started gaining more friends because of this club. We always try our best to make sure everyone feels welcome no matter what their skill level.

What are some activities you do in calligraphy club?

We have starter packets when we learn brush strokes, and then as the year progresses, we start leaning into more complicated concepts such as full sentences and sometimes paragraphs if we get there. Once you know how to write it, it becomes easier to read.

Do you plan on continuing calligraphy writing after high school?

I am always writing, and it is something I will continue after graduation.

What is something you hope for in the future of calligraphy club?

I really hope after I leave that someone can take over calligraphy and make future generations feel the same feelings I did when I joined as a freshman.
