In a world often consumed by screens and fleeting distractions, nestled within the halls of Avon High School, a community of young readers has formed a book club, breathing life into the pages of countless literary masterpieces.

The Book Club sponsor, Margo Wallace, said she researches and chooses books based on what is trending at the time.

“I do some research on some trending teen books through Goodreads, and Barnes and Noble. I’ll [also] talk to the club president. They’ll tell me if there’s anything that interesting them at that time and kind of just like peruse the school library every once in a while.”

Wallace said she got into reading in the 4th grade when her stepmom made her read the Harry Potter series over the summer.

“We had to read an hour a day while I was down at my dad’s house, so for a whole month, I finished the first Harry Potter book, and then I was hooked from there on out.”

Wallace has big plans for the Book club in the upcoming years, wanting to incorporate more diverse authors and topics into what the Book Club is reading.

“So, I like to get a variety of authors on a variety of topics. I don’t want to shy away from anything; reading and books are really powerful.

One of Wallace’s favorite things about the book club is the members’ excitement for reading. She loves it when kids get involved in the topic of books and what they’re currently reading.

“Seeing kids excited about reading and loving it? I love it, love it, like when we just have conversations about what we’re reading, and they’re just like, oh, I’m reading this book and this book. Everyone’s just like, oh, I’ve read that, and I’ve read that one too. Like, I think I love the excitement that they have for reading, because it’s not very common. ”
